Determined to secure his place in the pantheon of the greatest cinematic villains ever, John Kramer/Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) makes sure that he cheats even the oldest and most notorious killer of them all: Death.
During John Kramer’s autopsy, a tape is found in his stomach which is given to Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor). It informs him that the game is still on and that he’s going to be involved in it. In the meantime, Detective Kerry’s (Dina Meyer) body is discovered and it heralds the beginning of yet another game, one involving Lt Daniel Rigg (Lyriq Bent). The latter has 90 minutes at his disposal to figure out the “lesson” he has to learn and mend his ways.
The fourth instalment features a key twist in the ongoing Sawsaga: John is dead however his legacy continues. This is very interesting as Jigsaw’s mission transcends a one man’s obsession with revenge and redemption, and taps into a universal craving to see the perpetrators get their due. Jigsaw moves on from being judge, jury and executioner to becoming a vengeful old-testament god who wants an eye for an eye. Unfortunately, despite the intriguing course that the series takes, the film is patchy at best, with the good moments being few and far in-between.
Pity.
